Naomi Pietros' large-format paintings and drawings oscillate between references to reality and fiction, between narrative echoes and polychrome abstractions. In her simultaneously research-based and process-oriented practice, she examines the materiality of color, painterly means of expression and the reflexive potential in dealing with European art history. In particular, she refers to the repetitive compositional patterns of the Baroque, Antiquity and the exoticizing imagery of Fauvism. Her focus is on aspects of being in-between and the discrepancy between self-attribution and attribution to others, which she presents as fluid and fragmentary. What does identity mean when ambiguity is in the foreground as a central, yet fluid characteristic?
In her work series “fragments_A PARALLEL STORYTELLING”, she explores constructions of cultural identities in the field of tension between belonging, longing and reality.
